radical cartography

City Income Donuts, by Bill Rankin ::

"These maps show the distribution of income (per capita) around the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the US (all those with population greater than 2,000,000). The goal was to test the "donut" hypothesis — the idea that a city will create concentric rings of wealth and poverty, with the rich both in the suburbs and in the "revitalized" downtown, and the poor stuck in between.

This does seem to have some validity in older cities like Boston, New York, Philadelphia, or Chicago, but in newer cities it is not the case. Instead of donuts, one finds "wedges" of wealth occupying a continuous pie-slice from the center to the periphery.

Just from visual inspection, it also seems that poverty donuts all tend to have about a five-mile radius, regardless of the size of the city. Perhaps this is the practical limit for commuting without a car?"

nendo

nendo's concept:

Giving people a small ≪ ! ≫ moment.
There are so many small ≪ ! ≫ moments hidden in our everyday.

But we don’t recognize them.
and even when we do recognize them,we tend to unconsciously reset our
minds and forget what we’ve seen.

But we believe these small ≪ ! ≫ moments are what make our days so
interesting, so rich...

sand & birch diamond sofa

sand & birch explain the concept: "The Diamond sofa thought by Samanta Snidaro and Andrea Fino of Sand & Birch design studio is entirely realised in mirror-like aluminium. On the wide stripe 160 crystals of Swarovsky will be disposed creating images. The lamp on its side is a fluorescent or a led one."

I like thinking of the sofa this way...as a "provocative design", with..."predominantly aesthetical value" and I also wonder what would happen if this form was treated for contrast, for uber-functionalitly -- for instance, as a park bench with reading lamp, made of recycled materials...

knock down drag out chair

by material furniture, hailing from portland, oregon. I also love their flipper screen and boxer shelving. Described on Vivavi :: "Material Furniture is manufactured in the United States using FSC certified sustainable wood and ships with minimum packaging, just enough to ensure safe delivery. Throw in the company's commitment to sourcing materials locally and it is evident that we are in the hands of a thoughtful visionary whose furniture is refreshingly relevant for the world in which we live in today." found this thru 2modern, which has a great section devoted to eco-friendly furniture

Sony VN-CX1 Skype Mouse Phone

I really like this shape -- for either a mouse or a phone. It's very sleek & sexy -- and it actually looks well-sized & comfortable. But I'm really skeptical about whether or not I'd really want my mouse to also be a phone...I seem to have a habit of using both at the same time... Does anyone have any experience with this sort of multi-function mouse? I'm very curious about whether or not it's really practical... reviewed in audiocubes
